Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)

Enhancing the UK’s Clinical Trial Application Process Through AI Innovation. Each year the MHRA receives 1,000+ applications for clinical trials related to investigational medicinal products. These applications require detailed review by expert assessors, and a significant proportion are rejected due to common Grounds for Non-Acceptance, causing disruption, inefficiency, and delays in getting potentially life-saving products into the marketplace. Informed Solutions applied our AI Readiness Assessment method, delivering an eight-week exercise to identify where AI could add the most value through a risk-proportionate approach to individual use cases, undertaking a detailed assessment of data readiness, demonstrating technical feasibility through two operational demonstrators, and producing a robust, evidence-based roadmap for forward development. Aligned with government AI and digital strategies, the work demonstrated the real-world benefits of using AI to enable an accelerated, streamlined response to clinical trial applications and improve customer experience and efficiency, building in-house awareness and capability throughout. The work is now progressing through a rapid productisation phase that will deliver two transformational AI-enabled products into live operations.

Claire Harrison, Chief Digital and Technology Officer, MHRA

“We’ve been incredibly impressed with the work and the value that’s already been delivered in such a short timeframe. By combining Data Science expertise with a user-centric approach and an absolute focus on business benefits, the Informed team has built a really effective and collaborative relationship with experts from our Clinical Trials, Digital and Engineering teams. The work has helped us understand the ‘art of the possible’ and built trust and enthusiasm for a transformational solution. Whilst so many AI Proofs of Concept never transition into live operations, Informed’s approach has identified and tackled blockers up front, giving us a clear path to live and confidence in the benefits that can be achieved.”
